The application of scientifically based rearing and feeding technologies is one of the key approaches to improving productivity in beef cattle farming. Therefore, evaluating the productive performance of Kalmyk cattle under different rearing systems is of considerable scientific and practical importance.
To evaluate the effects of different rearing technologies on the live weight and meat productivity of Kalmyk bull calves and heifers.
The study was conducted at Kazakh Asyldary LLP in the Aktobe region of Kazakhstan. Kalmyk bull calves and heifers aged 9, 12, 15, and 18 months were assigned to control (pasture-based rearing) and experimental (intensive indoor rearing) groups according to the analogue principle. Live weight, absolute and average daily weight gain, meat productivity, and carcass morphological characteristics were evaluated.
Animals reared under the intensive production system demonstrated superior productive performance compared with the control group. At 18 months of age, the live weight of bull calves and heifers exceeded that of the control group by 40.2 kg and 31.7 kg, respectively. Absolute weight gain was 15.4% higher in bull calves and 15.0% higher in heifers than in the control group. Furthermore, the experimental group showed increased carcass weight, slaughter weight, dressing percentage, and meat yield, while the proportion of bone tissue was reduced.
Intensive indoor rearing combined with balanced feeding effectively improved growth performance, meat productivity, and carcass quality of young Kalmyk cattle. The findings support the practical application of this production technology for improving the efficiency of beef cattle farming.
