The article presents comparative studies of two methods of contraception in cats (n=20) in a veterinary clinic of the city: surgical sterilization with a complete cessation of reproductive function and therapeutic contraception with a temporary cessation of reproductive function through medication. Elective ovariohysterectomy of cats was performed by the generally accepted method using inhalation anesthesia, surgical access was performed along the white line of the abdomen. The effectiveness of surgical and therapeutic methods of contraception in cats was 100%. However, in the course of clinical and special diagnostic methods and long-term screening, 50% of cats for which hormonal preparations were used for contraception were diagnosed with various pathologies of the genital organs and mammary gland for 5-7 months: mammary fibroadenomatosis in 20%, polycystic ovaries in 10%, pyometra in 10% and endometrial adenocarcinoma in 10% of cases.
